Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook (The Gadget Show Live 2012) – Slim with a magic button

The Acer Aspire S5 is a beautifully thin and fast ultrabook that caught my eye while I was mooching around the Gadget Show 2012. It’s just 15mm thick which makes the S5 the world’s thinnest ultrabook. Even though small is definitely beautiful, it’s the S5′s party trick that really sparked my interest.

The 13.3-inch laptop is built for portability and style. At just 1.35kg it’s easy to carry around and feels pretty sturdy. With 6.5 hours of battery life it should be able to last out and about. The S5 has Intel’s Core iSeries processor inside, which should make it powerful enough to handle multi-tasking. If speed is of the essence, the S5 loads from sleep mode in around 1.5 seconds.

The Acer Aspire S5 has Dolby Home Theatre v4 which should give high quality sound for such a small device. The only problem is I couldn’t test this feature too well in such a loud environment and my experience with Dolby in Acer laptops has been unimpressive. My current Acer laptop (an Acer Aspire 7738g) has Dolby Theatre with a built in subwoofer that distorts anything with bass. Hopefully, Acer has improved this partnership and the S5 will offer crystal clear sound.

The Aspire S5’s party trick is the MagicFlip I/O port launcher. At the push of a button a motorised compartment lowers from the back of the machine exposing 2 USBs, a HDMI and a Thunderbolt port (Thunderbolt offers fasts 20gbps data transfer). This keeps the laptop razor thin while not sacrificing connectivity. It’s a very cool feature.

The big deciding factor for me will be the price. If priced competitively the Acer Aspire S5 has the smart design that could rival any ultrabook on the market.

The S5 will be available from June 2012. S series ultrabooks are available now.

Very much agree Jamie – loved this little piece of kit – and the hidden ports on the back are a genius solution to the thin/connect problem a lot of Ultrabooks have.

If they can launch this at the £600 mark – they’ll have a winner on their hands!

Have to agree! This ultrabook is a beaut! Lets see if they undercut the Macbook Air…
